North Macedonia

North Macedonia (Macedonia until February 2019), officially the Republic of North Macedonia is a country in Southeast Europe. It gained independence in 1991 as one of the successor states of Yugoslavia. Capital and largest city: Skopje. As with other countries around the globe, history and political wrangling led to the new name of Republic of North Macedonia. Here is a brief explanation of what triggered the name change: 1991: The Republic of Macedonia declared independence from Yugoslavia. 1991-2019: By naming the country Macedonia, the nation inadvertently created years of strained relations with neighboring Greece, which also has a region called Macedonia. 2019: The Republic of Macedonia officially changed its name to the Republic of North Macedonia. Not only did this ease its relationship with Greece, it also paved the way for North Macedonia to become a member of NATO.

In june 2021 the Republic of North Macedonia has begun issuing revised banknotes bearing the country’s current name. (The 500-denar banknote (P-31a) followed by the 10-denar banknote (P-27a) are the first denominations issued with the new name.) The new banknotes look like the previous issues, but with the bank’s name changed to the Народна Банка На Република Северна Македонија (National Bank of the Republic of North Macedonia).
