The renminbi (abbreviated RMB; simplified Chinese: 人民币; traditional Chinese: 人民幣ì; lit.: 'people's currency'; symbol: 元 / ¥; code: CNY) is the official currency of China. The renminbi was introduced by the People's Bank of China (the monetary authority of China) in 1949. It was issued only in paper money form at first, and replaced the various currencies circulating at that time.
The primary unit of the renminbi is the Yuan (Chinese: 元, lit.: 'beginning' or in formal contexts: 圆, lit.: 'round', abbreviated: CNY). However, in everyday Mandarin the words renminbi or yuan are rarely used. People use instead the word kuai (块 which means 'piece')
