The historic harbor crane at the former Ilmenau harbor is considered one of the landmarks of the city. At the time, the crane was one of the most efficient in northern Germany. It served above all to the Lüneburger saline, for shipping of the salt produced there and for the landing of firewood, which was needed for the salt production. The original wooden crane has been rebuilt over and over again over the centuries. In its present form, the crane is almost unchanged since 1797

The Kalandhaus was the meeting house of the Kaland Brotherhood, founded in 1274, one of the most important charitable associations of the 15th century in Lüneburg. The still-preserved Kalandhaus was built around 1480/91
