A Southern European island country consisting of an archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea. Malta lies 80 km (50 mi) south of Italy, 284 km (176 mi) east of Tunisia and 333 km (207 mi) north of Libya.
With a population of approx. 450,000 Malta is one of the smallest and most densely populated countries. Capital: Valletta. On 1 May 2004 Malta joined de European Union and on 1 January 2008 the Eurozone.
Currency: Euro (EUR, €). The euro replaced the lira on 1 January 2008.
The lira (MT, Lm), was the currency of Malta from 1825 until 31 December 2007.
