Independent State of Samoa, commonly known as Samoa and, until 1997, known as Western Samoa. Samoa is located south of the equator, about halfway between Hawaii and New Zealand in the Polynesian region of the Pacific Ocean. The two main islands are Savai'i and Upolu with four smaller islands surrounding the landmasses. Capital: Apia, located on the central north coast of Upolu, Samoa's second largest island. Apia is the only "city" in Samoa. Currency: Tala (WST).
